Speed bumps, speed humps and speed cushions are vertical-deflection traffic calming devices. But what is the difference?
Similarities
Speed bumps, speed humps and speed cushions are traffic calming solutions to generally applied to low-volume residential streets.
All three devices can be constructed from asphalt (most common), concrete, or rubber.
Rubber devices are generally temporary, applied as an emergency intervention, or on a trial basis prior to installing permanent devices.
Speed bump
Speed bumps, which date from the early 1900′s, are 3-4 inches tall and 12 inches in travel length.
They have a design speed of 5 mph.
They have been in common use for decades in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and other countries.
Speed hump
Speed humps were introduced in recent decades as a more gentle version of the speed bump.
Like speed bumps, speed humps span an entire lane or street width, but measure 3-4 feet in length and have a curved profile as high as one foot.
On non-arterial streets we use what are called “speed humps,” and here’s the confusing part – they are commonly known as “speed bumps” by the public and are identified by signs as being speed “bumps” even though they aren’t.
Speed cushion
Speed cushions are modified speed humps which we use on low volume arterial streets and on non-arterial streets that have been designated as an emergency fire routes.
They are divided into sections to allow vehicles with a larger wheel bases, such as a fire truck or ambulance, to straddle them without delaying their response time.
Buses can also travel over these speed cushions without jostling the passengers.
