In the City of Greater Geelong there are a number of bollards with advanced timber rot will need to be replaced over the coming months.

Maintenance

City Hall has begun drawing up a contract for the vital maintenance of the timber art pieces, which are a key attraction on the city’s foreshore.

The estimated costs have not been disclosed but the price of replacing an entire bollard will be about $20,000.

The group of bollards depicting lifesavers at Western Beach, including that of former prime minister John Howard, are among the structures that have been identified as needing improvement works.

Mayor John Mitchell said some of the bollards had been made of pylons from the old Geelong piers, and were affected by advanced timber rot.

“Some of the original bollards found to be in an advanced state of timber rot will have to be replaced,” Cr Mitchell said.

Save the artwork

The council is taking great care to ensure that the artwork originally created by the late artist Jan Mitchell was protected and preserved.

“Council officers would be working very closely with the artist who undertakes the replacement work to ensure that artist Jan Mitchell’s designs were faithfully reproduced.”

Alternative Option

As Geelong’s bollards are in a position where they get water on them and as well as their susceptibility, sooner or later the bollards need to be replaced.

An alternative to the existing bollards would be bollards made of steel, as they are not prone to any environmental conditions.
