Speed cushions and Speed Humps
Speed humps and Speed Cushions are both traffic calming measures that are installed on the road surface to encourage drivers to reduce their speed.
Speed humps are narrow vertical deflections that cover the entire width of the road from curb to curb.
Speed Cushions are similar, except that they are larger and do not reach all the way to the curb, providing a gap so that cyclists, emergency vehicles and buses are able to pass over or around them without slowing down.

Where are they installed?
Both are typically used in areas where excessive speed can endanger pedestrians, for example in residential areas and outside of schools. However, since speed cushions are more expensive to install, they are normally restricted to routes that require cycle or emergency vehicle access, for example in cycle lanes and outside hospitals.
It is important to follow local authority guidelines when installing traffic calming measures and to ensure they do not prevent access for the disabled.
Can I park on them?
Vehicles are usually permitted to park on speed humps and speed cushions, unless there are specific waiting or loading restrictions, or the vehicle is causing an obstruction.
Advantages of speed cushions:
While both measures are effective in slowing down traffic, speed cushions provide a few obvious advantages over traditional speed humps that justify the extra cost.
- They are easy and fast to install, minimizing disruption to traffic flow.
- They can be removed and relocated easily.
- They are gentle on road users' vehicles, being made of durable vulcanized rubber.
- They incorporate reflective strips that are highly visible in all weather conditions.
- They are environmentally friendly! being made of recycled rubber.
