Powder-coating also called electrostatic coating or thermoplastic paint, is a method of painting that we use to ensure an even and long-lasting finish. It involves spraying the product with fine powder paint and then curing it in an oven to ensure a strong bond. It guarantees a bright, smooth finish without letting the paint run. The process of powder coating generally involves three separate stages: Pre-treatment, coating and curing:


To ensure an even coat and strong bond, the product must first be thoroughly cleaned. This step removes any dirt, oil, lubrication greases, metal oxides or welding scale that could spoil the finish. The part is cleaned, degreased and pickled to prevent re-oxidization. With the cleaned and prepared pieces, we can begin the powder coating process.

Powder Coating

For the second step, we use an electrostatic spray gun to apply a fine coat of powder paint on the products. The gun charges the paint particles ensuring that they stick to the part at a thickness of roughly 100 microns. The powder coating is applied inside a ventilated cubicle with powder recovery system, so any over-spray can be collected and reused to reduce waste.

The powder coating used for the finishing of our products is without solvent and does not cause any hazards to workers. Even with those good conditions, protection is necessitated to avoid workers inhale the powder coating.


Once the powder is applied, the product is placed into an oven to dry and cure. We call this process “polymerization”. This ensures a strong bond between the new coat of paint and the surface of the product.

When the product is ready, it undergoes a final quality control inspection before passing on to packaging.




A thin polymer film is deposed. Afterward, the metal is rinsed and dried. The pre-treatment can be done by a variety of chemical and mechanical methods. Depending on the size, the material which needs to be powder coated and the types of impurities, the method for the powder coating will be different.

Powder coating

The most common way to apply powder coating on metal surfaces is to spray the powder using an electrostatic gun, or corona gun.


After being powder coated, the products are put in an oven at a temperature of 200°C.

It is this step that allows the polymerization of the paint and hardeners which react to temperature.

The time spent in the oven varies according to the size of the products and the oven’s temperature. On average it is about 30 minutes.


The powder coat is really difficult to remove thanks to its strong quality. Most of organic solvents are ineffective, but methylene chloride and acetone are well known to be the best removers for powder coatings. An abrasive blasting process can also remove the powder coating effectively.


So why would you powder coat a product when you could just spray liquid paint and let it dry? Powder coating offers distinct advantages over other painting techniques.

These are some of the main benefits of electrostatic coating:

  • Very hard-wearing, resistant to abrasion and will not fade in sunlight.

  • Resistance to high temperatures, acids, and solvents.

  • Environment-friendly! Overspray powder can be collected and reused.

  • Almost no volatile organic compounds (VOC).
  • Thermoplastic paint will not run or drip on the entire metal surface so that a uniform protective coating can be spread over the surface.

  • The one-coat application process creates a thicker coat than conventional liquid paints.

  • Equal thickness across a part giving a very smooth and glossy finish. Liquid paint can often leave bumps or streaks.

  • Large choice of colors and textures in the RAL or Pantone color code available.


Powder coatings are 100% solid - meaning no solvents, no fumes, and no dangerous gasses. While liquid finishes contain solvents which contain pollutants known as volatile organic compounds (VOC's), powder coating releases minimal, if any, amounts of VOC's into the atmosphere.

The electrostatic coating can be applied with much higher efficiency than wet paints because over-sprayed powder can be collected and then re-applied. This means that 99% of the original product can be used, resulting in minimal waste.
