Turning is a material removal process, which is used to create custom (cylindrical) shapes such as bollard heads by cutting away unwanted material. The rotating workpiece is moved against a cutting tool in order to remove the excess material. The machines required for turning are named “lathe”.

During our turning process, in contrast to our milling or drilling process, the workpiece spins while the cutting tool does not.

1. Load: We load the workpiece into the turning machine and secure it to the chuck or collet (common workholding fixture).

2. Cut: The cutting tool feeds along the length or diameter of the rotating blank in order to remove the surplus material. Sometimes it is necessary to approach and retract the tool from the workpiece, do tool movements between features, adjust machine settings, and change tools.

3. Unload: We unload the workpiece from the lathe.

4. Quality Control: Our quality inspectors make sure that we achieved the expected geometrical shape and a smooth surface. 

The turning machine can also include spindles for the cutting tools to accomplish non-turning operations like milling and drilling. In this case, the machine stops the workpiece from spinning and performs these operations within the same machining cycle as the turning work.

Sino Concept uses a variety of operations to yield the desired part shape. These operations can be categorized as external (Turning) or internal (Drilling/Boring). External operations modify the outer diameter of the workpiece, while internal operations modify the inner diameter. The following operations are our used  turning operations:

  • Turning: A single-point turning tool moves along the side of the workpiece, removing material to form different features. These features are typically machined at a small radial depth of cut and multiple passes are made until the final diameter is reached. 

  • Facing: A single-point turning tool moves along the end of the workpiece, removing a thin layer of material to create a smooth flat surface. The depth (usually very small) of the face may be machined in a single pass or may be reached by machining at a smaller axial depth of cut and making multiple passes.

  • Grooving: A single-point turning tool moves into the side of the workpiece, cutting a groove equal in width to the cutting tool. Multiple cuts can be made to form grooves larger than the tool width. Special form tools can be used to create grooves of varying geometries.

  • Thread cutting: A single-point threading tool (60 degrees pointed nose) moves along the side of the workpiece, cutting threads into the outer surface. The threads can be cut to a specified length and pitch. It may require multiple passes to be formed.
